The Gleaners — John-François Millet
Gleaning has been around since the dawn of the human race. The term's first known use of the term was in 14th century France, but our species gleaned for survival right from the start. It's likely that early humans gleaned fallen fruit and other edibles, and it's even mentioned in the Bible and the Torah, as well as the Koran.
